Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for their big tentpole Sci-Fi adventure movie titled The Midnight Sky starring and directed by George Clooney.
This post-apocalyptic tale follows Augustine (George Clooney), a lonely scientist in the Arctic, as he races to stop Sully (Felicity Jones) and her fellow astronauts from returning home to a mysterious global catastrophe. Clooney directs the adaptation of Lily Brooks-Dalton’s acclaimed novel Good Morning, Midnight, and includes a pretty stellar cast including the likes of David Oyelowo, Kyle Chandler, and Demián Bichir, and Tiffany Boone.

The film was shot ahead of the COVID-19 shutdown and before the onslaught of fires seen in 2020, but the calamities Earth faces in the film feel eerily similar. Though the film looks equal parts thrilling and intelligent, here’s hoping that this sci-fi outing that seems to show our failure as human beings to protect this planet has a glimmer of hope to it. 2020 has already been a helluva year for dyer things.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Clooney described The Midnight Sky as Gravity meets The Revenant. The comparison makes sense as not only is Gravity star Clooney directing and starring in the film, but The Revenant screenwriter Mark L. Smith adapted the novel for the screen. Netflix already had success with one space project this year, Jason Katmis and Hillary Swank’s family space drama series Away, although it got canceled earlier this month. Clooney told Vanity Fair that having space experience during the making of Gravity assisted the production of The Midnight Sky.
“One of the things that I learned from working with Alfonso about space is, once you’re in the antigravity kind of world, there is no north and south or east or west, because it doesn’t exist in space. Up isn’t up, and down isn’t down. So the camera can be upside down, characters can be upside down, and it’s hard to do, because you’re constantly rotating the camera, and hoping you’re not doing it so much you make everybody sick. Alfonso did it just beautifully.”
