The Harder They Fall Trailer: Jonathan Majors, Regina King and Idris Elba Face Off In New Netflix Western

Netflix has just unveiled an impressive first trailer for The Harder They Fall, a star-studded new western made by British filmmaker Jaymes Samuel. It’s a refreshing action-event that doesn’t feel tide to an existing IP or comic book, just some gnarly cowboy action recontextualized with a modern eye and taking place in the old West.

When the outlaw Nat Love (Jonathan Majors) discovers that his enemy Rufus Buck (Idris Elba) is being released from prison he rounds up his gang to track Rufus down and seek revenge. Those riding with him in this assured, righteously new school Western include his former love Stagecoach Mary (Zazie Beetz), his right and left hand men — hot-tempered Bill Pickett (Edi Gathegi) and fast drawing Jim Beckwourth (R.J. Cyler)—and a surprising adversary-turned-ally. Rufus Buck also has his own fearsome crew, including “Treacherous” Trudy Smith (Regina King) and Cherokee Bill (LaKeith Stanfield), and they are not a group that knows how to lose.

We need to tip our hats to this cast which includes Jonathan Majors (Lovecraft Country), Idris Elba (The Suicide Squad), Regina King (Watchmen), LaKeith Stanfield (Judas and the Black Messiah), Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2), and Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods) as Bass Reeves. It will also feature Danielle Deadwyler, Edi Gathegi, R.J. Cyler, Damon Wayans Jr., and Deon Cole.

It’s been a stellar last couple of years for star Regina King, coming in strong with her performance in HBO and Damon Lindeloff’s Watchmen miniseries before making her directorial debut with the Oscar-nominated One Night In Miami to which she and cinematographer Tami Reiker, ASC captured cultural icons such as Sam Cooke, Malcom X, Muhammed Ali, and Jim Brown on the brink of transformations. The Harder They Fall looks to give King some much needed release in the form of some kick-ass cowboy action.

The Harder They Fall is directed by British filmmaker Jeymes Samuel, his second feature after directing They Die by Dawn previously. However, Samuel is best known for for his music production career before making the jump with his directorial debut. Working with Jay-Z on the music for Baz Lurman’s The Great Gatsby, Samuel might be known better for his stage name The Bullits. He’s currently producing an untitled Emmett Hill movie, about the 14-year-old black boy who was lynched in 1955, as well as producing a Richard Pryor biopic from writer-director Kenya Barris.

Samuel is working with cinematographer Mihai Mălaimare Jr. who has lensed everything from Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master to Taika Waititi’s recent Jojo Rabbit. Mălaimare and Samuel are choosing stark, contrasting colors to really bring out the dirt and dust of the Old West, while focusing on just how much their largely Black cast pops in every frame.
