Warner Bros has dropped the second official trailer for Denis Villeneuve’s epic adaption of Dune, based on the classic sci-fi novel by Frank Herbert. This is the first time we’re seeing any new footage of the anticipated film since the first trailer debuted one year ago.
In the far future of humanity, Duke Leto Atreides accepts stewardship of dangerous desert planet Arrakis, also known as “Dune”, the only source of the most valuable substance in the universe, “the spice”, a drug which extends human life, provides superhuman levels of thought, and makes foldspace travel possible. Though Leto knows the opportunity is an intricate trap set by his enemies, he takes his Bene Gesserit concubine Lady Jessica, young son and heir Paul, and most trusted advisers to Arrakis.
Check out the new trailer for Dune: Part One below:
Dune sports an all-star cast led by Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, and featuring a massive ensemble cast: Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Zendaya, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, David Dastmalchian, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem.
Based on Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel, Dune is directed and executive produced by Denis Villeneuve, director of the movies Maelstrom, Polytechnique, Incendies, Prisoners, Enemy, Sicario, Arrival, and Blade Runner 2049. The screenplay is co-written by Villeneuve with Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth. It is produced by Cale Boyter, Joe Caracciolo Jr., and Mary Parent.
The cinematography comes from Greig Fraser, who has lensed incredible recent work in the Star Wars universe as the DoP on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and The Mandalorian. The Australian cinematographer came to prominence with his Oscar-nominated work on Lion, and is currently behind the camera on Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman. Fraser is bringing those dark tones to the desert planet of Arrakis and many of the visuals present in this recent trailer showcase the scale, textures, and inky lighting approach that Fraser and co. are taking.
Fraser also represents a departure of sorts for director Villeneuve who has had a recent working relationship with the prolific Roger Deakins, ASC, BSC, on three of the Quebecois filmmakers last four movies (Prisoners, Sicario, and Blade Runner 2049)
Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Entertainment also released brand new posters for the companies’ highly-anticipated remake. The Dune character posters, which you can check out in the gallery below, offer us a closer look at each character while also boasting its all-star cast including Oscar Isaac’s Duke Leto, Rebecca Ferguson’s Lady Jessica, Jason Momoa’s Duncan Idaho, and more.
Following its world premiere at the 2021 Venice International Film Festival this September, Warner Bros will release Villeneuve’s Dune in theaters everywhere starting October 22nd, 2021.
