2014 Golden Globe Awards Nominations Are Out!

It’s that time of the year again as awards season kicks off so that Hollywood can pat itself on the back and let everyone know that their work is magical. Today’s announcement is for the 2014 Golden Globe Awards, as chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and there seems to be few surprises as most of the nominees were pretty much destined for their spots. Of course, the Golden Globe Awards always trend towards a few headscratchers and there are some to report as usual.

Starting off on the movies side, 12 Years A Slave and American Hustle are both tied for the lead with the most nominations in the film category with seven, including the best picture drama for 12 Years and best picture comedy (?) for Hustle. Chiwetel Ejiofor was nominated for Best Actor in a drama for his raw take in 12 Years. Other nominated actors include Idris Elba for Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Tom Hanks for Captain Phillips, Robert Redford for All Is Lost and Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club. Looking at the Best Actress for a drama side, Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine and Sandra Bullock for Gravity headlines that list. Alexander Payne’s Nebraska is picking up heat as well with nominations for Best Picture for Musical or Comedy, Bruce Dern for Best Actor, Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for June Squibb.

If there were any sort of surprises, it’s that Lee Daniel’s The Butler scored exactly zero nominations. Of course, when compared to say, Rush, which scored the Best Drama nomination, it’s a bit of a surprise considering the amount of box office it did as well as the prestige behind the film. Apparently Oprah’s reach does not extend to the Hollywood Foreign Press. Another snub would be for The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, which seemed destined for a few nominations but Ben Stiller will have to see if Oscar shines on his picture later. Fruitvale Station and Michael B. Jordan also was left off the list after creating buzz earlier this year. Harrison Ford also did not get nominated for 42, as well as the late great James Gandolfini for his great role in Enough Said.

As for the television side, Game of Thrones gets robbed again. That could basically be the sum of it all because I don’t understand how a terrific show or just piece of media does not get nominated for its greatness. It’s baffling to me. However, for Best Television Drama, seeing House of Cards get nominated, along with Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright for Best Actor and Actress respectively makes me happy. In fact, Netflix should be happy that they scored a nomination for Orange Is The New Black’s Taylor Schilling.

Masters of Sex seems to be the big winner as they scored a nomination for Best TV Series Drama and Lead Actor for Michael Sheen. Arrested Development, a favorite here in the Grizzly Bomb office, did not get a Best Comedy nomination but did score a Best Actor for Jason Bateman. Michael J. Fox also scored a Lead Actor nomination for his show and Brooklyn Nine-Nine scored a nomination for Best Comedy and Best Actor for Andy Samberg. As for the mini-series categories, American Horror Story: Asylum and Behind the Candelabra dominated those categories so no real surprises there.

A.C.O.D. Trailer Has Jane Lynch As Adam Scott’s Not-a-Therapist

I’m a fangirl and while this is not news, I just felt like I should lead with that because the A.C.O.D. trailer is what this fangirl’s dreams are made of. Adam Scott, Amy Poehler, Catherine O’Hara, Jane Lynch, Adam Pally, Richard Jenkins, Clark Duke, and even Ken Howard… when your cast makes someone think, “oh, yea Jessica Alba as well“, then you know things are in a good place.

Please, please, please, don’t let this be a case of good trailer ending up being a crappy movie. That would be most unfortunate.

This is director Stu Zicherman’s first film behind the camera, but he was an executive producer on one of my favorite “canceled too soon” shows, Lights Out. Zicherman was also the writer of Jennifer Garner’s Elektra, but let’s try to not hold that against him.

One does have to wonder if going with an acronym for a title was a great idea. Acronyms haven’t done well historically, and even more recently the incredibly poor performing R.I.P.D.. Here’s hoping that A.C.O.D. doesn’t fall victim to its own horrible title.

Taylor Swift vs. Fey and Poehler, the Internet Battle of the Ages

March 5th, 2013 might just go down in history as the day the internet experienced a schism. The line has been drawn in the sand and the people of the internet have taken sides. In one corner, the fans of whiny “my daddy paid a lot of money and now I’m a star and deserve to win all the prizes” Taylor Swift, and in the other corner, the incredibly talented and witty and good looking fans of two women who possess similar qualities, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

What has prompted this bad blood between the factions? Well, let’s head back a few months to the night that the aforementioned Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted the Golden Globes.

In case you needed a reminder, Taylor Swift lost to Adele and wasn’t too thrilled about it. See, Ms. Swift is not used to not winning and it took her a minute to process this new sensation. Not only that but she was the butt of a joke. Did you catch that? She, Taylor Swift musical princess, was the butt of a joke. So, you can sympathize that she had a rough night. There have been many times I’ve been the butt of a joke that I’ve had to take to my bed for days so the fact that sweet Taylor was able to sit there, fighting through the pain like a brave soldier, is inspiring.

The joke? Tina Fey and Amy Poehler had the audacity to comment on Taylor’s very public dating life. Here’s the thing, the image put out (that word choice will be funnier in a minute) by Swift and her people is that Taylor’s a bit of a ho. Okay, maybe not a ho ho, maybe the Disney princess version of a ho, but she does seem to get around. Weirdly, she seems to have a thing for Nickelodeon boy band types, and she’s gone through her fair share of them.

Now, before everyone gets all up in arms about how “I DON’T KNOW HER LYFE!!1!!”, you are right. I don’t, and neither does Tina Fey or Amy Poehler, but a big part of the whole celebrity thing is, the public only has what you put out to go off of and that is what Fey and Poehler made a joke about.

So joke is made, two months pass, Adele wins an Oscar, all is forgotten. Except it isn’t. Apparently, Taylor Swift has some inside knowledge on the afterlives of our favorite funny girls. Brace yourself, for this is some deep stuff right here.

I missed the press release but apparently Taylor Swift is now the voice of today’s feminists. Our new anthem is now one of many of Taylor Swift’s empowering songs about either a.) wanting to date a boy b.) being broken hearted because said boy has left or c.) wishing all types of ill will upon boy’s new girlfriend.

Yes, this is exactly who should lead a new generation of women. This is the voice they should be following.

Or… and I’m just spitballing here, they could turn instead to someone like Amy Poehler whose YouTube channel, Smart Girls at the Party, is filled with empowering things for young women as opposed to pining over a boy.

That’s right, Amy Poehler has an entire YouTube channel geared towards advice for girls that goes beyond how to properly cry over a “lost love”.  Not only that, when she heard about where she will spend all eternity?

That is how you respond to someone saying something badly about you. Tina Fey? The same Tina Fey who has been very active in women’s rights issues? Who wrote an entire movie about bullying? She pretty much said what everyone else is thinking.

A joke. Of course there are some who thinks it’s hypocritical for Fey to make Mean Girls and then joke about Taylor Swift. Does this new Taylor Swift version of feminism mean that we aren’t allowed to make comments about another women ever? In addition to the joke about Michael J. Fox’s son, they also said that maybe Swift take some time to focus on herself, advice pretty much every 23 year old needs to hear. Especially a 23 year old that still has an “I’m Rick James bitch!” attitude. 

I think we can go ahead and call this internet battle over. It has been won. Surely there’s a Harry Potter vs. Twilight argument out there that hasn’t been hashed out yet.

The 70th Annual Golden Globes – GB Recap

I am, admittedly, an awards show fan so it comes as no surprise that I tuned in to last night’s Golden Globe Awards. There’s just something about watching Hollywood’s best and brightest get all dressed up and then sit for hours while pretending they were okay with just being nominated that makes for really good entertainment. Add in my well documented love for Tina Fey and Amy Poehler and there was no way I’d be missing this one. As with every other awards show, there were definite highs and even more definite lows but I think we can all agree that perhaps last night’s Golden Globes ended up with more in the “highs” column.

First off, the aforementioned Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. After three years of Ricky Gervais and his “trying too hard” approach to comedy, it was really nice to laugh at a joke without feeling like an awful person for doing so. It wasn’t like Fey and Poehler went all Pollyanna on us, for they did have some nice zingers throughout the night, but it certainly did not feel as if they were mean-spirited. Of course I am biased, being a fan in the first place, but they were quite possibly the best hosts I’ve seen in quite some time.

Another high? Ben Affleck winning Best Director for Argo. He had the stage and could have mentioned his “snub” from the Oscar committee but decided against it, classy move. We’ve already discussed the Academy Awards nominations here but the befuddlement is only increased by Affleck’s win last night. What did the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) see that the Academy did not? It boggles the mind.

Of course I’m a huge SNL geek so it’s no surprise that I loved Will Ferrell and Kristin Wiig as they presented one of the best actress awards. When Ferrell said that Dame Judy Dench used to be a police sheriff and this was her breakout role? I nearly choked on my coffee. Of course I would love for Tina and Amy to host from now to eternity but if they can’t, Will Ferrell and Kristin Wiig would be an okay replacement. However, I think it’s safe to say that if Ferrell and Wiig were the hosts, perhaps Tommy Lee Jones would stay home as he did not appear to be a fan of their antics in any way, shape, or form.

Jodie Foster’s acceptance speech after being awarded the Cecil B. DeMille award was both a high and a low maybe? I honestly spent the entire six minutes ping ponging between “you go Jodie Foster!” and “I have no idea what you are saying right now Jodie Foster”. It was very discombobulated. I have to imagine that when she wrote the speech (I’m assuming she wrote it), it made a lot more sense than it did when she got up on stage and nerves and adrenaline took over. Like Kevin Costner earlier in the evening, it made people question if she was either going to retire from show business or take a long walk off a short pier. Of course when she talked about her mom, I was just like every other sap in the room, searching my cleavage for a kleenex.

A definite high? I’m sorry but it had to be Taylor Swift losing to Adele in the Original Song category. I usually don’t delight in the heartbreak of others (well not all the time) but this was hysterical. She is just so used to winning everything that she just sat there rather stunned when she got beat. Of course if she had won I’m sure there would have been a resurrection of the Kayne incident and nobody needs that so really it was a double win for all involved. Well, except for Taylor Swift.

Lows? There weren’t a whole lot but one of the biggest ones was Sacha Baron Cohen. Oh boy, that was uncomfortable. I don’t know if it was announced what he was going to be presenting beforehand (I didn’t hear it0 but after he slams Russell Crowe’s singing performance in Les Mis and then makes reference to Anne Hathaway’s unfortunate upskirt photo he goes on to present Best Animated Feature. Call me crazy, but don’t presenters usually say something at least somewhat related to the award they are presenting? Yikes.

Perhaps the biggest low of the entire show, and frankly award shows in general these days, was network television. I love network television and I know I am not alone in that. There are millions of people who tune into network television every single day and quite a few of those millions are watching something besides singing and dancing (and diving- seriously Fox?) competitions. 30 Rock, Happy Endings, Community, New Girl, and my beloved Parks and Recreation are all examples of great shows that can be found on network television. So why is it that year after year, the only awards being given out to TV shows and their actors, are going only to premium cable? Don’t get me wrong, I like Girls just as much as the next gal but I have an incredibly hard time believing that Lena Dunham gave a better performance in Girls than Amy Poehler did as Leslie Knope in Parks and Recreation. I understand that the voters like shows that push the envelope but when premium cable is up against networks there really is no contest as the envelope HBO and Showtime are dealing with is light years larger than the networks have to stay within.

While I’m on my little mini-rant can we all just finally agree to stop nominating Chuck Lorre shows in the first place? They are fun entertainment for a night when you just really don’t want to think or feel any type of emotion beyond slightly amused. Nothing more, nothing less. There is no way that they should ever be nominated for anything beyond a Teen Choice award.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler to Host Golden Globes

… and the internet exploded.

No really, I think it did. Well for me it did, quite literally. I had no internet at my home last night for many hours (I liketa died) and for some reason the email I use for work and entertainment news was not loading anywhere, even on my phone. When it finally came back, the first thing that popped up was this:

At long last, the waiting comes to an end. In a matter of hours, Parks and Recreation will finally return from what has seemed like the longest hiatus in the history of television. Okay that might be a slight exaggeration but come on – I feel like Ron Swanson as he walked into the diner asking for all the eggs and bacon they had. I’ve been starving myself waiting for that first bite of sweet Swanson ass. Hmmm… this is getting a little creepy now.

I’ll be the first to admit that NBC does a lot of things wrong. The Olympics, The Today Show, NBC News in general, canceling shows before they even have a chance (this is my third mention of Kings in a week), their sometimes pain in the ass relationship with sites like YouTube; but one thing they do right is put out videos for their sitcoms. Granted you aren’t going to find them unless you are actively looking for them but hey, what do I know? And then you find them and they won’t embed and you spend a maddening amount of time trying to figure out why and find no answer so just click on the link and enjoy the trailer for Season 5.

“The perm must wait, Autumn. The perm must wait.” There’s a reason this woman was elected to public office, she is just so wise. Plus, I think we can all agree that any scene that involves Ron Swanson and food is bound to be awesome. Especially if that food has not quite made it to the “food” state yet.

2012 Emmy Nominations Are Out, Who Got Snubbed?

It is that time of the year again where dreams get crushed, and the elite throw a party for themselves to give the obligatory ‘pat on the back’. The 2012 Emmy Nominations are in, and it’s time to fight for the snubbed and decry the undeserving. Parks and Recreation Finale Has Two Endings!

If you don’t watch Parks and Recreation you’re a moron.  The show is absolutely hilarious, and Amy Poehler is brilliant as the main character, Leslie Knope.  The show is currently in its fourth season on NBC; and the story arc of the season has primarily revolved around Leslie’s campaign for city council.  It’s been a rocky road on her way to election day, and the show’s writers have been extremely tight-lipped about what the outcome will be.  So tight-lipped, in fact, that they made the decision to film two different finales: one in which Leslie wins the election and one in which she loses.  It’s like they’re creating their very own ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ novel.
