Terminator 5 – The Rock vs. Arnold?

Remember when Grizzly Bomb  recently covered an interesting piece of news about how Arnie maybe being the lead role in the new Terminator 5 movie? If you will recal,l I thought that they had tried pretty much everything they could to revamp this franchise and it may be a struggle to give us something new and fresh even after Salvation did not do so well at the box office. Well Bleeding Cool just posted up some news which certainly took this reviewer by surprise. Here is a quote from the Bleeding Cool article originally published on WWE Examiner website.
“We’re told the script is now being developed and with one fellow action movie star in mind for the role of T5′s most sinister machine. A source close to Annapurna Films exclusively tells WWE Examiner Friday morning that one version of the script is being produced specifically for The Rock himself”
Okay I am a sucker for action movies and no matter what you say about Dwayne Johnson he knows his stuff in this particular style of film. The mention of “sinister machine” can really only mean one thing. The Rock is going to play the iconic tin man, The Terminator. To say this is a good idea would be an understatement as he would make a great killing machine. The intensity is practically stamped on his face in every movie he is in……….okay, maybe not The Tooth Fairy but you get the idea. So if Arnie is not in the Skynet driving seat then who is? Well Bleeding Cool has some news on that to.
“T5 may be a prequel set in the days of Sarah Connor’s parents, marking the first time terminators have been sent back in time to kill a character that existed before both John and Sarah Connor.

Incredibly, Schwarzenegger may not play the role of a machine in the next film, but a potentially heroic human figure in or close to the Connor family. One theory is that Schwarzenegger’s remarkable ability to protect the Connor family in the 1940s or 1950s with antiquated weaponry by today’s standards ultimately inspired the machines to develop a terminator in his likeness that was eventually sent to 1984 when Sarah Connor was first targeted for termination.”

Terminator 5- Lead In

What do you do with a franchise when you have gone as far back with it as you can? Well, you go further back! This actually seems like a cool idea. We would get a new set of characters to follow who are still linked with the original movies (so not changing continuity) and it would get some much-needed new blood in the franchise and hopefully, the cinema seats. Even if Arnie is not as hot as he once was, seeing him in a different role from the Terminator will certainly be enough to pique a lot of people’s interest. The 40s and 50s setting adds a new element to with maybe Arnie as the Connor family protector role using a Tommy gun on Terminator Dwayne is something I would pay money to see. It also gets around the awkwardness of Arnie some how being de-aged to play The Terminator. Though I have to say the notion of using Arnie as a template for The Terminators because he is such an ass kicker seems a tad strange. Maybe it’s The Terminators way of showing respect, similar to when a Predator rips out your spine for his wall collection because you were a brave warrior.

This is only a slight wrinkle and this recent news makes this reviewer a heck of a lot more excited than they were a few weeks back when the concept of Terminator 5 was announced. Still in  its early days, but the more I learn about this concept the more I like it. Maybe taking an Untouchables and Lawless approach to the Terminator franchise could work, maybe they could even inject a bit of humor (that worked so well in Terminator 2) that could come back into play after the depressing and full on feel of Salvation. I am taking a guess right now that Arnie dies a tragic death and if he does you heard it here first at Grizzly Bomb.

Keep checking with us for more details as this develops.

Escape Plan: First Trailer for Stallone & Schwarzenegger’s New Prison Movie

Escape Plan, formerly known as The Tomb, released its first trailer today. No doubt that 20 years ago the release of this trailer would’ve been the biggest news on the internet, had anyone been ON the internet that is. However, now in their 60s, Stallone and Schwarzenegger don’t have the same pull they once did, but that doesn’t mean this won’t be worth watching. Even if their last 2 movies (Bullet to the Head, Last Stand) weren’t.

Terminator and Dumb and Dumber Sequels Are in The Pipe Line But Do We Actually Want Them?

It has been sequel crazy lately with two movies in particular popping up as interesting choices. The one most people will be frothing at the mouth in anticipation for is the Terminator movie that could be in the works. Over at The Wrap they reported that Paramount is trying to get the distribution rights to the franchise. The Terminator trademark is owned by Megan and David Ellison who paid a whopping 20 million to buy it way back in 2011 and have been trying to get Terminator 5 up and running ever since. If you are unfamiliar with these two, they have worked on such projects as Zero Dark Thirty, Star Trek and Mission Impossible. The news that Paramount is showing an interest could mean things are finally coming together.

Then, this news came online from The Arnold Fans about The Terminator himself Arnold Schwarzenegger becoming involved in the movie. Not just involved either, he thinks he will be back to play the role he made famous. In an interview with the website he was quoted as saying:
“I’m very happy that the studios want me to be in Terminator 5 and to star AS the Terminator, which we start shooting in January and I’m also going to do King Conan – to play that role and also to do another Twins movie. So I feel very proud of that. I feel very happy and I’m looking forward to doing those films.”
He seems quite sure of himself that Terminator 5 will have him in the hot seat again (as well as Twins 2 but let’s not get started on that right now). The main problem is that the Ellison’s are on a time frame. The rights switch back to James Cameron in 2019 and though that seems far away now, with casting, production, and advertising seemingly not done yet they really need to pull their fingers out if they want to make a movie before the rights expire.

Then in what can only be described as a shrug your shoulders in dismay news, rumours have surfaced again (via Collider) that the Dumb and Dumber, titled Dumb and Dumber To (no, really that’s how it’s spelled) sequel could still be on as the Farrely brothers search for a new home for their sequel to the hit 1994 comedy. Warner Brothers have passed on it and it seems that Red Granite (Horns) are possibly going to take it on board with them getting the foreign distribution rights. They only have a few movies under their belt though and it makes you wonder if they will have the finance to pull this off. Not much else is known at this stage other than the film will have both Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels reprising their roles and the plot involves a search for Harry’s daughter so they can help with a kidney transplant.

dumb and dumber couple

The question that keeps coming up again and again in my mind is “Who Cares?” The Farrelly Brothers have had a bad run of it recently with most of their films getting worse and worse. With films and TV becoming more and more extreme, it seems their cheeky blend of gross out and childish humour is not really needed anymore. It was almost 20 years since Dumb and Dumber was released and with the prequel completely missing the point and entertaining no one I just wonder if there is still an audience for this movie. If there is it has to be a pretty big one to get the Farrelly’s back on top. The original is a fun film and I would rather it stay that way than possibly ruin it with an unnecessary re-launch.

Then we move to Terminator 5 which will have an audience already built in for it. Will fans flock back in their droves to see this new installment even if Arnie is back? Well if we look at the gross from these films I think we get our answer.

Terminator Salvation = $371 million worldwide

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines = $433 million worldwide

Terminator 2: Judgment Day  = $519 million worldwide

It is still making money but it is suffering from the classic case of diminishing returns. They have already tried to go the reboot / prequel route with Salvation and with Christian Bale and a CGI Arnie it still did less than Terminator 3 did. Unfortunately Arnie is not the main draw he once was with The Last Stand under performing at the box office, will his role in this be enough for movie goers to pay out their hard earned cash? And how the heck are they going to make him look like his earlier counterpart because Arnie is showing his age now, he is not the young killer we once saw destroying a police station. Unless this is done on the cheap, I do not see it making back its money. Whether I am right or wrong or whether these films even get made is unclear at the moment, but stay tuned to Grizzly Bomb for more updates as they arrive.

The Toxic Avenger: Reboot to Feature Schwarzenegger?

The amazing theme music, the hilariously grotesque deaths, and the near pantomime scenes of campiness will all be going through the minds of Toxie fans everywhere when ever his name is mentioned. Well keep hold of those happy memories because there is a very real chance they are about to get obliterated. Variety have just released the news that plans are in the works to remake this beloved radioactive crusader from New Jersey into a more main-stream friendly action adventure movie. If that is not making you run to the hills screaming then just wait as there is more. The Governor himself Arnold Schwarzenegger is in talks to play the lead role. Now I know what most people are thinking right now. You are imagining Mr Freeze from Batman and Robin just with green skin and a pink tutu right? Well get rid of all those thoughts because he is not going to be playing Toxie at all…

Toxic Avenger

Now for those unfamiliar with the character of the Toxic Avenger here is a brief recap. Made by Troma Studios (makers of all things trash and proud of it) we have the character of nerdy janitor Melvin Ferd, who after accidentally falling through a window and into some toxic waste (a prank by some heartless jock types), he emerges as a deformed muscle-bound superhero who dishes out justice to the people who wronged him. He is New Jersey’s only superhero. He has fought thugs, corrupt mayors, his own evil twin and even Satan himself and still keeps coming back for more. Despite the highly inappropriate content of the moives, they still found a way for kids to get in on the action with the popular, if not ill-advised, Toxic Crusaders cartoon series.

Toxic Crusaders picture from soundonsight.org
Might as well have made a kids cartoon out of The Accused…

This is all in the planning stage at the moment so nothing is set in stone but if Arnie is not the avenger then who could he be? My guess is that International Film Trust (who are in charge of the reboot) and Steve Pink (Hot Tub Time Machine) will have Arnold as some kind of detective trying to piece together a series of horrific crimes all involving a mop. No just kidding he is actually a character called ‘The Exterminator’ (thanks to Yahoo Movies for that information), a black ops agent who teaches the Toxic Avenger how to use his powers to fight for justice. So is the Toxic Avenger even going to be Melvin at all, because this seems more like he may be an ex soldier who gets exposed to radiation while on a mission or something of that ilk.

The choice of Steve Pink is interesting. His vision of the 80s from Hot Tub Time Machine was exactly how I imagined it from numerous daily doses of movies like Pretty in Pink and Red Dawn. We know he can do humor quite well, but is he skilled enough to take on Toxie, especially as he has an army of fan boys and girls who will be hot on his heels?

toxic avenger remake arnie

What it seems to me while reading this new is that Troma Studios don’t seem to have any input here. One of the main reasons these films worked was because of the cheesy vibe that Lloyd Kaufman (the creator of Toxie) gave to the movies. The great blending of dark horror and comedy helped to give this film a cult following. If International Film Trust is going for a different tone they may be losing track of what actually makes these movies so appealing. All I do know is that good or bad, this news is going to bring more attention to Troma and their flagship character and if it’s getting new audiences to visit Tromaville for the first time than this reviewer is all for it. Worst case scenario we will always have the original to fall back on. Hopefully future news will give us a better idea on the direction this film will be taking.

Terminator 5 In The Works, Now With More Arnold Schwarzenegger!

I’m probably one of the few hundred or so people who actually quite enjoyed Terminator: Salvation. While it wasn’t the thrilling all out war that was promised from the opening scenes of Terminator 2, it still whetted my appetite pretty thoroughly for more Terminator movies and I was pretty ready for the franchise to come back strong. Unfortunately like I previously said, I was one of the very few who liked that movie, and what with the infamous Christian Bale blowout on set, it seemed like the Terminator franchise was doomed.

Fortunately it seems like the rights to the franchise were picked up by Skydance Productions, and progress is being made on the five-quel.

via [Deadline]
Skydance Productions and Annapurna Pictures have set Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier to script the next installment of The Terminator franchise.
The good news about this is that #1) We’ll be getting a new Terminator movie, and in the spectrum of things, that’s something I’ll always be thankful for, and #2.) the talent involved is interesting to say the least. Patrick Lussier is a name known to genre fans, who most recently unleashed the wonderfully insane Drive Angry on the unsuspecting public. Laeta Kalogridis wrote Shutter Island, which I found to be pretty enjoyable. But the last bit of REAL good news, is that the ol’ Governator himself will be returning to the franchise!

via [BleedingCool]
Briefly: our man Patrick Dane is down at the London junket for The Last Stand and he reports back, in short, that Arnold Schwarzenegger will be appearing in the next Terminator movie. Arnold said so himself.
My real point of contention here is going to be where exactly the movie will take place in the Terminator timeline? I think the only logical place to take it would be to show us the time machines actually being invented, and The Resistance trying to stop Skynet from building the time machine to go back into time, so the Terminator’s remains won’t be found by Cyberdyne, so there will be no Skynet in the first place. The problem with that would be with no Skynet there’d be no Resistance to stop Skynet, so then Judgement Day would still happen and there’d be The Resistance who’d stop the time machines and…

Well now my nose is bleeding so I’m gonna stop there. But a Terminator movie that delves into the mythology of the chicken/egg time travel situation when it comes to how Skynet came to be sounds great. Really have it go into detail about time travel, explain how it works and iron out some of the kinks/plotholes from T2 and forward. Plus have an aged Michael Biehn in there somehow, along with aged Arnie, (presumably from the alterna-future?), and you’d have the beginnings of a time travel story that’d really be something.

I'm sure he could use the work too.
I’m sure he could use the work too.

I’m basing this on nothing but pure speculation, since there’s really no story or script details at all at the moment, but you can bet when there is, my weird mind will be racing with possibilities. At this point there’s so many places they could go with the story, and I’m really hoping they don’t screw it up monumentally.

Of course, that’s if the movie ever actually gets made. Clearly you can see I hope it does.

Oh if only...

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s The Last Stand: New Trailer and Interviews

Back in August we talked about Arnold’s big 2013 comeback, starting with The Last Stand – out this Friday. It’s been since 2003 since Arnold’s last lead role in the epically disappointing Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. Now while I imagine this new one will be more T3 than T2, I still plan to visit the theater this weekend. It is Schwarzenegger after all. The basic idea is that Sheriff Arnold is too old and the FBI is too slow, and the bad guys are super fast and good. Here is the 2nd trailer for it…
