Man From U.N.C.L.E. Finally Making Progress
It seems as if the film adaptation of the popular 60s spy show, Man From U.N.C.L.E. is finally making some headway. After languishing in preproduction with directors coming and going, the project has finally gotten underway with Guy Ritchie at the helm. Not only that but actors are coming on board and things are starting to take shape.
Man of Steel star, Henry Cavill, is set to take on Napoleon Solo, the role made famous Robert Vaughn, and Armie Hammer will be Illya Kuryakin, originally played by David McCallum. For a long while, Hammer was sure to be the next Batman (though he did not make our list of Justice League casting) but has recently been telling anyone who will listen that is he no longer interested in the role. Well good for you Armie, we aren’t interested either. We can only hope that he brings a better performance to Man from U.N.C.L.E. than he did to The Lone Ranger. It would be a shame for yet another TV institution be ruined at his hand.
Joining Caville and Hammer is the beautiful Elizabeth Debicki who most recently starred in The Great Gatsby. It has not yet been announced what role Debicki will be playing.
Most interesting, and probably at the same time most distressing, is the news that this film version of Man from U.N.C.L.E. will be an “origin story”. It has been reported that it will take place in the 60s but “Unlike the friendly banter of the original series, the pair are initially hostile to each other.”
Hard to believe that Armie Hammer didn’t run screaming from yet another origin story of a well known franchise. You know, because The Lone Ranger did so well and all. The film is planning to start filming in September, no release date has been set.
