Neil DeGrasse Tyson and The Starship Smackdown…

So in a week filled with overnight lines and shoulder-to-shoulder crowds, Comic Con was crammed with hundreds of panels and booths. The one I had the most fun at though, was the one that closed out my weekend. Starting at 3:30 on Sunday afternoon, in a room of around a thousand people, I saw a panel of Sci-Fi geeks who seemed like they were truly enjoying themselves. The group, moderated by Mark Altman (Free Enterprise) has been doing this panel since 2002, and it seemed pretty unanimous that this was the best version to date. The whole idea is to nominate a bracket full of famous Sci-Fi Starships, and argue out who would win each matchup in the bracket.

Altman’s panel included the lovely Madison Dylan in her full-out Star Trek Geek glory, dressed as an ‘Orion slave girl’, and playing Altman’s ‘Vanna White’ as she worked the board. Among the panelists Thor and X-Men: First Class writer Ashley E. Miller, Rob Burnett who just finished an extensive documentary for the ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation 25th Aniversary Blu Rays‘, Star Wars Comic Book writer and artisit Chris Gossett, Clone Wars writer Steve Melching, former Millennium writer Kay Reindl, and Geek Magazine executive editor Jeff Bond. Mr. Bond, who has, what I’m sure his wife would call “an excessive amount” of Starship models, worked with Geek Magazine to create a poster of all the ships built to scale. The poster, which will be available in the upcoming 2nd issue of Geek (on Newsstands in August), was distributed to the audience as a guide.

Once it got started, it quickly turned into a comedy routine as the panelists tore apart the ships almost as quickly as each other. The level of comfort between them was obvious, and made for a good viewing experience. And I’m not just saying that because I was seated next to Nikki Griffin, who was in the midst of a rather convincing ‘Emma Frost’ Cosplay.

The headline stealing real event of the day though came near the end of the panel (which by that point had run more than 30 minutes over) when renowned astrophysicist  Neil DeGrasse Tyson emerged from the audience to comment.

This was not planned, and the spontaneity of the whole thing left even the most veteran panelists star struck…

It’s funny, as I was sat there, watching the girls on either side of me (Nikki Griffin and my friend Anna in her Sookie Stackhouse Cosplay) totally Geek out over Dr. Tyson’s appearance, I think it was still a little lost on me just how special a moment I had witnessed. Rob Burnett popped such a nerd boner I thought he was gonna flip the table. And now, in the few days since, while collecting my thoughts (and traveling) this story has blown up all over the place. I think the Hollywood Reporter put it best though:

“For all of its overblown, over-inflated, hyper-stimulated mania, sometimes the San Diego Comic-Con can deliver a moment of glorious inspiration, one that reminds us why we love the things we love and how that love knits us together. And that Kirk’s Enterprise is just friggin’ cool.”

And with influence from Trekkies like Altman, Madison Dylan, Jeff Bond, Rob Burnett, and Dr. Tyson – it’s not surprising that they out voiced Star Wars loyalist Steve Melching to end with the original ‘Enterprise’ won out the whole bracket this year.

X-Men: Destiny – Behind-the-Scenes Trailer and Cover Art

Heading to living rooms soon is the somewhat anticipated X-Men: Destiny. While I do look forward to this game, I won’t be lining up for it or anything. Don’t get me wrong, I love the premise and the gameplay looks adequate. But usually when I play an X-Men game I want to play as an X-Man(or Woman). I may be a little picky here, so let’s just say I will be picking it up when it comes out, but my expectations aren’t huge.

Out of the Schism Comes X-Men: Regenesis

I am now on the fence about X-Men: Schism. The story is taking a terrible turn but I’m going to give it a chance and probably finish it just to see the outcome that will lead to the next X-story now titled Regenesis. Once Uncanny restarts there will be another number one title called Wolverine and the X-Men. Check out the Uncanny teaser, complete with team members only shown in silhouette for dramatic anticipation! Special thanks to IGN for the images!

Good lord where in the hell is Cyclops? If I have to see Emma Frost as the leader of a team of X-men I may have to gouge my eyes out. I’ve about had my fill of Frost, or as I like to call her, Slutty McSlutty-pants. It was cute when Grant Morrison made her a team member back in his X-men days but it’s kind of played out at this point. I was more comfortable with her as leader of the Hellions or Generation X, not a main X-men team. There were definitely rumors of Cyclops possibly being killed during Schism during the San Diego Comic Con, so could this teaser be a hint towards that? Man I hope not. I hate Cyke sometimes but don’t know how I would feel about him not leading the X-men.

Next is the Wolverine and the X-men teaser:

I gotta say I’m not a huge fan of how Wolverine looks in this teaser, but that’s how Bachalo usually draws him so I’d better get used to it if I’m going to read the title. Either way, I’m getting pretty antsy to read the third issue of Schism and see where it’s heading. Will Cyclops die? Will the Schism story get any worse? We’ll see soon enough, but that’s definitely not soon enough. In the meantime, how about everyone’s input on who’s on each team? I can definitely make out Magneto in the Uncanny teaser.

Grizzly Review: X-Men First Class

Let me start by saying, I really enjoyed the first 2 X-Movies, especially X2 which I’d put among my ‘Top Ten Comic Movies’ for sure. What Brett Ratner did with X3 however, and the terrible Wolverine movie that followed, inexcusable. Coming off of those 2 colossal disappointments I have to admit my expectations were severely lowered going into First Class. But what Matthew Vaughn delivered, well, it’s fully restored my faith in the franchise.

Marvel Comic Review: X-men Legacy #248: Age of X Aftermath

This issue was a must, with everyone being left without any closure and wondering what the after effects of the Age of X would have on our favorite mutants. I also wondered what the heck happened to Legion at the end? Didn’t Xavier say they didn’t know where he was? How would they deal with him? Would anyone smack Dr. Nemesis in the face for dropping the ball on his treatment on Legion? I would say all of that was answered in this issue for the most part.

New Trailer: ‘X-men: First Class’ (Again)

I swear if they would have just included everything from the teaser trailer, the first trailer and the international trailer I would have warmed up to this movie a lot quicker than I did. To say this movie now looks awesome is an understatement. Watch the trailer and let your words melt away into “oooooohs” and “aaaaaahs”:

Even though my first initial reaction was excitement, in retrospect I should be cautiously optimistic. As many of our brilliant readers know, many trailers are way better than their movies actually turn out to. Actually this happens more than half the time.

Something else to consider is how terrible nearly every Fox released comic movie has been over the years. The most recent Fox crapfest in comic movie history being Wolverine: Origins.

One thing is for sure: even with all of the coolness shown to us in the trailer, we haven’t seen everyone in full action mode. The glimpses we have seen of Havok and Banshee using their powers have been great, but we still haven’t seen Sebastian Shaw dealing out an ass whooping, or Emma Frost do much besides turn into her diamond form and have an awesome rack. All that remains now is to see the finished product, because one more trailer of this and we’ll have seen the entire movie.

Everyone please comment below and let us know what your anticipation level is for X-men: First Class. And if they decide to do a sequel, I want some freakin’ Sentinels!

Marvel Comic Review: Age of X Chapter 6

Chapter Six – New Mutants #24

Age of X has been a thoroughly enjoyable read. I’ve not picked up many X-Titles in quite awhile because nothing has really interested me since Messiah War or Second Coming. This arc, though not as in-depth as either of those arcs I mentioned above, was definitely a well crafted story that I don’t think anyone was able to piece together too quickly. I picked my brain apart and still couldn’t figure out what was happening until it was revealed to be Legion behind the whole Age of X universe and that none of it was real. It was something that he created, or at least one of the many personas he was creating and discarding during Dr. Nemesis’ work on his psyche.
