Trailer Roundup: Bachelorette, For a Good Time Call…, and MORE!!

[tabgroup][tab title=” Compliance “]

In this disturbing but intriguing story, writer/director Craig Zobel tells the true story of a fast food clerk who is the subject of a vicious and tragic prank call that leaves no victim unchanged. I find this trailer fascinating because, according to the filmmaker and the people who have been following the film closely, the events depicted in the movie were all true to life. This is a movie that illustrates the horrors of people who were just “following orders”.

The controversy surrounding this movie has been pretty huge, with many audience members claiming that there’s no way the stuff in this movie really happened. But, you know what they say, the truth is stranger than fiction.

Stars: Ann Dowd, Pat Healy, Dreama Walker, Bill Camp, and Philip Ettinger.

Release Date: August 17th, 2012

[/tab][tab title=” Life of Pi “]

The story of an Indian boy named Pi, a zookeeper’s son who finds himself in the company of a hyena, zebra, orangutan, and a Bengal tiger after a shipwreck sets them adrift in the Pacific Ocean. Allow me to opine for just a moment. I’ve never liked Ang Lee as a director. I thought Taking Woodstock was great, but Hulk is awful and Brokeback Mountain is overrated. This movie….this frigging movie. Why? Just…why? That is all.

Stars: Suraj Sharma, Tabu, Irrfan Khan, and Tobey Maguire (as Yann Martel, the author of the novel that served as the inspiration for this film…yeah, not sure how that’s going to work)

Release Date: November 21st, 2012

[/tab][tab title=” Jack and Diane “]

Jack and Diane. Jack and Diane. Jack. Diane. Diane and Jack. Jack……and Diane. I’ll be honest I don’t even know what the hell this movie is about. The trailer, which stars Juno Temple (with hair as frizzy as ever), making out with a girl named Jack and then Jack is not really a girl she’s this thing and there was this awful trailer music and Kylie Minogue is in it and it just looks awful. But I mean…the possibility of Juno Temple getting naked and having hot lesbian sex and then getting eaten by her lover does have an appealing ring to it. Oh yeah, and Dane DeHaan (who’s awesome) and Leo Fitzpatrick (who’s even more awesome) are both in it. If there’s one way to explain it, it’s like Beastly meets Twilight meets Skinemax – with more bloody entrails.

Stars: Juno Temple, Riley Keough, Dane DeHaan, Leo Fitzpatrick, Haviland Morris, and yes…..Kylie Minogue

Release Date: November 2nd, 2012

[/tab] [tab title=”Bachelorette“]

In this winner, we’ve got Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher, and Lizzy Caplan playing Bridesmaids to their old friend, Becky, played by Rebel Wilson. On the night before her wedding to Dale (Hayes MacArthur), the three girls rip the dress apart and end up spending the rest of the night trying to fix it. After watching this trailer, I remember liking this movie a lot more when it was called Bridesmaids. Rebel Wilson, who can’t seem to score a leading role, is billed as a supporting character IN A MOVIE ABOUT HER! And Adam Scott’s involvement in this movie, while slightly reassuring, is looking like another Our Idiot Brother. He’ll probably have, like, two scenes which is unfortunate because re-teaming him and Lizzy Caplan after “Party Down” would’ve made a great movie on its own.

Stars: Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher, Lizzy Caplan, Adam Scott, James Marsden, Rebel Wilson, and Hayes MacArthur.

Release Date: September 6th, 2012

[/tab] [tab title=”V/H/S “]

V/H/S is a POV, found footage horror film from the perspective of America’s top genre filmmakers. In ‘V/H/S’, a group of misfits are hired by an unknown third party to burglarize a desolate house in the countryside and acquire a rare tape. Upon searching the house, the guys are confronted with a dead body, a hub of old televisions and an endless supply of cryptic footage, each video stranger and more inexplicable than the last. I can’t even explain the sheer terror I felt while watching this preview. Directed as a series of shorts by ten of horror’s most prominent filmmakers, V/H/S looks and feels…revolutionary. Let’s hope the film lives up to it’s awesome preview.

Directed by (the stars are all no-names and this list is much more interesting): Ti West, David Bruckner, Joe Swanberg, Adam Wingard, Chad Villella, Glenn McQuaid, Justin Martinez, and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin

Release Date: August 31st OnDemand, October 5th in Theaters

[/tab]  [tab title=” The Canyons “]

The trailer for this movie defines “on the fence”. Director Paul Schrader (who is responsible for writing Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The Last Temptation of Christ, American Gigolo, but also directing Dominion: A Prequel to The Exorcist so it can really go either way), and writer by Bret Easton Ellis, one of the most important and imaginative writers of all time, are making a movie about a group of 20-somethings in LA that stars….Lindsay Lohan and some guy named (I shit you not) James Deen who is (again, no shit being shitted) a porn star. I love this trailer because it sets up the location very well and gives literally nothing away. Bret Easton Ellis understands the mind of a troubled 20-something, and I feel like this film will assess that accurately. Paul Schrader is awesome and this could be a great comeback for him. I’m definitely excited for this movie but I’m also very skeptical. The reason there’s no footage of the actual film in the trailer is because the teaser was released just as production started. There’s no release date, no set photos, no nothing. Just some stock footage of LA. Go figure.

Release Date: 2013

Stars: Lindsay Lohan, James Deen, Nolan Gerard Funk, Amanda Brooks, Tenille Houston, and Jim Boeven

[/tab] [tab title=”For a Good Time, Call…”]

After vomiting in her car, Katie (Ari Graynor) is forced to room with Lauren (Lauren Miller) to pay for a fabulous Gramercy Park apartment, and in order to make ends meet, the unlikely pair start a phone sex line together. Shenanigans undoubtedly occur in this hilarious trailer for what could be this year’s only truly unisex comedy. Cameos by Seth Rogen ensure some comedy for the guys but with a crew compiled mostly of women (the film was written but not directed by women), the raunchy subject matter seems to be a front for what is essentially a comedy aimed at the ladies.

Stars: Ari Graynor, Lauren Miller, Justin Long, Mark Webber, and Seth Rogen

Release Date: August 31st, 2012

Maleficent Is on Her Way

Those of us who grew up with the classic Disney films have had the joy (or maybe sorrow?) of seeing these stories turned into live-action flicks over the past several years.  Quite possibly the best part of these remakes was the portrayal of the villains.  Glenn Close as Cruella De Vil in the 1996 version of 101 Dalmatians, for example, made me decide I’d much rather work for the cynical, harsh editor Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada.  Also, Charlize Theron’s recent evil queen in Snow White & the Huntsman sparked in me a new appreciation for a villain I had otherwise thought rather shallow. Now it’s time to make way for some visible horns.

Angelina Jolie as Maleficent Those eyes could stare into your soul.

Set to release in 3D on March 14, 2014, Maleficent promises to share the other side to the 1959 animated classic Sleeping Beauty, this time focusing on development of Maleficent’s character.  The official Disney statement said, “The film reveals the events that hardened her heart and drove her to curse the baby, Aurora” (LATimes).  Directed by Robert Stromberg (production designer for Avatar and Alice in Wonderland) the cast is being led by Angelina Jolie, who has “already got her horns fitted” and has taken on the gutsy task of performing some of her own stunts.  Jolie points out in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that Maleficent is a multi-layered character who has her strengths and weaknesses just like any other person:

I hope in the end you see a woman who is capable of being many things, and just because she protects herself and is aggressive, it doesn’t mean she can’t have other [warmer] qualities. You have to figure out the puzzle of what she is…  It sounds really crazy to say that there will be something that’s good for young girls in this, because it sounds like you’re saying they should be a villain. [Maleficent] is actually a great person. But she’s not perfect. She’s far from perfect.  (EW)

The film also stars Elle Fanning as Maleficent’s opposite, Princess Aurora, as well as Juno Temple, Harlto Copley, and Imelda Staunton.  Production has already started in England, and apparently the Jolie-Pitt kids are making some trips to see their mother perform in all her robed glory.

Since Maleficent was always one of my favorite villains because she was just so purely dark and wicked, I am both curious and hesitant to see this production in its final release.  I’m always interested in hearing the other side of the story; that’s just a reasonable, fair way to learn and interact with other people in life.  However, I don’t believe that younger children should see this film, as their young minds are used to more black and white standards, and will not be able to fully grasp the situation of Maleficent’s proposed internal struggles and development.  The nature of such a character is probably better saved for more mature audiences, such as teens on  up, who can discuss and analyze that character and all her decisions and the impact they make.

Overall, for a character whom I believe most people thus far have considered 100% evil (I mean, really, who doesn’t?  She invokes the powers of hell, which seems pretty darn evil), Maleficent definitely promises to shed some new light on this horned female; we’ll just have to wait to see if that light will give us some nourishing vitamin D or if it will leave our skin burned and peeling.

Yet Another ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Robin Rumor

Speculation about whether or not Robin will appear in The Dark Knight Rises has been going on for a long time now. Nolan has made it clear that there is no place for Robin in his Bat-world, which you think would end it all right there. But not us fanboys, no sir. We have to keep looking, keep hoping, keep pining for that little bit extra out of a film. Let’s take a look at some of the other Robin/Nightwing rumors that have shown up over the course of the film’s production.

Trailer Roundup: The Watch, Killer Joe, Fat Kid Rules The World & More!

It’s time for my favorite part of the year. What time is that you might ask? Well, it’s the time of year when we get the previews for all the summer and fall movies coming out for the year. But why do you get excited just for summer and fall movies, you might ask? Well, simply put, they’re just better. Summer films are meant to entertain, while the fall fare is all Oscar bait and leftover blockbusters that didn’t make the cut so you’re either getting A-grade quality or C-grade cheesiness, both of which are very enjoyable.

In this edition of Trailer Roundup, trailers for what might win Best Picture at the Oscars or Worst Picture at the Razzies will share the stage to be consumed for your film-going pleasures.

The Watch (RedBand)

Formerly known as Neighborhood Watch, the film has gone through some major marketing changes due to some recent current events.  The film follows an ‘urbanite’ who moves to a new community and joins the Neighborhood Watch, who soon find out that they are in the midst of an alien invasion. It looked hilarious back before the marketing switch, and it looks even better now that they are focusing on the aliens. – SupaScoot

Stars: Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill, Richard Ayoade, Billy Crudup, Rosemarie DeWitt, Will Forte, and R. Lee Ermey

Release Date: July 27, 2012

Bait

In this R-rated gorefest from unknown director Kimble Rendall, Bait 3D follows a group of tsunami survivors who are trapped in a supermarket. And not because of the water. No, there’s a 12-foot killer shark lurking in the surrounding waters, and the only chance of survival they have is waiting for the water levels to die down. Does this sound stupid? Yes. Is the trailer stupid? Yes. But is it going to be a shark-filled, gore-filled, dead-person-filled, cheesy-dialouge-filled piece of awesome shit? Absolutely.

Stars: Phoebe Tonkin, Alex Russell, Xavier Samuel, Julian McMahon, Sharni Vinson, Cariba Heine, and Lincoln Lewis

Release Date: September 6th, 2012

Argo

I think we can all agree that Ben Affleck is a better director than he is an actor. So his newest film, which he directed I might add, looks pretty great. I love movies about movies, and that’s what Argo is… kind of. According to IMDb: As the Iranian revolution reaches a boiling point, a CIA ‘exfiltration’ specialist concocts a risky plan to free six Americans who have found shelter at the home of the Canadian ambassador. That risky plan you might ask? Make a fake movie. Argo looks to be the most entertaining war story of the year.

Stars: Ben Affleck, Alan Arkin, John Goodman, Michael Parks, Chris Messina, Victor Garber, Bryan Cranston, Kyle Chandler, Taylor Schilling, Michael Cassidy, and Clea DuVall

Release Date: October 12th, 2012

The Possession

It seems like we’ve just got the preview for this year’s biggest stinker. Produced by Sam Raimi of all people, The Possession follows a little girl who purchases a mysterious antique box at a local garage sale. Unbeknownst to her, the box is home to a malevolent spirit that possess her body, and it’s up to her parents to stop it. The problem isn’t that it looks poorly made, it just looks so derivative. It’s even “Based on a True Story”. I can’t wait until the day Hollywood runs out of true stories to tell.

Stars: Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kyra Sedgwick, Madison Davenport, Natasha Calis, Grant Snow, Agam Darshi, Quinn Lord, and (not even joking around here) Matisyahu

Release Date: August 31st, 2012

Killer Joe

Alright, everyone. This is where shit gets serious. Matthew McConaghuey in an NC-17 movie directed by William Friedkin based on a play by Tracy Letts? Count me the hell in. Oh yeah, and the movie co-stars Emile Hirsch and Juno Temple, two of the best young actors working in Hollywood. After accumulating a hefty debt, a young man hires a hit man to kill his evil mother who has a $50,000 life insurance plan on her. Thing is, the hit man is a maniacal wacko who instead accepts the boy’s sister’s hand in marriage instead of monetary payment. Things get a little crazy, apparently.

Stars: Matthew McConaughey, Emile Hirsch, Juno Temple, Gina Gershon, and Thomas Haden Church

Release Date: June 29th, 2o12

Fat Kid Rules The World (RedBand)

In Fat Kid Rules The World, Troy is a morbidly obese and depressed teenager who, after attempting suicide, is saved by street performer and teenage drug addict Marcus. The two form a bond and start a punk band together, bringing Troy both confidence and fame as he realizes his impact on the world. But when Marcus’ drug addiction becomes a problem, it’s up to Troy to help him live to see another day. From the trailer, it seems like this will be a great quirky coming-of-age film that will appeal to all demographics.

Stars: Jacob Wysocki, Matt O’Leary, Billy Campbell, Sean Donovan, Jeffrey Doornbos, Vivan Dugre, Julian Gavilanes, Russell Hodgkinson, and Matthew Lillard

Release Date: TBD

The Host

Stephenie Meyer adaptations have a reputation for being… complete and total shit. Much like the adaptations of Nicholas Sparks, moviegoers appreciate none-too-much the sappiness and artificial fluff that comes with a love triangle between a human and a vampire and a werewolf. So, it’s rather surprising that the teaser trailer for Meyers’ most recent adaptation, The Host, looks halfway not shitty. Starring Saoirse Ronan, the film is about a dystopian future where there is no crime, no hate, and no conflict because of a parasitic alien soul that invades peoples’ bodies… I think.

Stars: Saoirse Ronan, Diane Kruger, William Hurt, Frances Fisher, Max Irons, Jake Abel, Chandler Canterbury, and Scott Lawrence

Release Date: March 29th, 2013

The We and the I

Michel Gondry understands the human condition better than a psychologist, so it’s fitting that he would make a film about a bunch of seniors during their last bus ride home from school. The premise is fascinating and seems to me like a film that would be adapted into a play or vice versa. From the trailer, it seems like the portrayal of these kids is extremely accurate, and I’m quite excited to see how their different personalities play against one another in a film that takes place in such a confined space.

Stars: Meghan Murphy, Alex Barrios, Brandon Diaz, Joe Mele, Lady Chen Carrasco, Patricia Jade Persaud, Jonathan Scott Worrell, and Raymond Rios

Release Date: TBD

Beasts of the Southern Wild

This trailer for the Sundance Film Festival favorite looks to be equal parts The Tree of Life and Where the Wild Things Are, except possibly even more magical than those two combined. The story follows a six-year-old named Hushpuppy who goes in search of her mother after learning of her father’s deteriorating health. Along the way, she meets a fascinating cast of characters who all teach her something about life. To be honest, this is possibly one of the most gorgeous trailers I’ve ever seen and I truly can’t wait to see this film.

Stars: Quvenzhane Wallis, Dwight Henry, Levy Easterly, Marilyn Barbarin, Jonshel Alexander, Kaliana Brower, Joseph Brown, and Nicholas Clark

Release Date: TBD
