The Stand Trailer: The Dark Man Is Coming In Stephen King’s Magnum Opus For Our Apocalyptic Times

“The world is now a blank page and it is there you must make your stand.”

CBS All Access has debuted the first official trailer for their Stephen King adaption of one of the author’s most acclaimed works, The Stand. Writer-director Josh Boone (New Mutants) helms the miniseries which introduces unfamiliar audiences to the peril of mankind and two warring forces: the 108-year-old Mother Abagail (Whoopi Goldberg) and the otherworldly villain Randall Flagg (Alexander Skarsgård) aka the Dark Man.

The events of The Stand unfold after a biologically engineered super-flu (nicknamed Captain Trips) kills off 99% of the world’s population. The survivors struggle to deal with the aftermath while also trying to rebuild society. Two distinct sides crop up, one led by Goldberg’s Mother Abagail, who just want to move on and build, and the other, who set up shop in Las Vegas and plan all sorts of mayhem.

The Dark Tower: Everything We Know So Far…

It has taken decades, but with the success of epics like Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones, Stephan King’s own saga will finally, after several false starts, find its place on the silver screen.

Book to movie adaptations are no new thing, especially not to a veteran like King, who has seen nearly 100 screen adaptations of his work. Complaints about changes to those stories is likewise par for the course, and The Dark Tower will be no different.  One proposed change however, might give fans real reason to be bothered. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, King mentioned said change to the story structure;

Save the Dark Tower! Save the Dark Tower!

I’ve honestly run out of Dark Tower pictures from writing articles about how many times this damned is happening and then isn’t happening and then is happening again – 4/8/11, 5/6/11, 7/20/11 – but hey, there’s more casting news to report…. recasting that is. It would appear that ‘Maximus’ himself – Russell Crowe will be taking the place of Javier Bardem as the badass gunslinger and main character ‘Roland Deschain’. Of course this is all just speculation at this point.

David Yates + The Stand = Happening

Looks like we know what David Yate’s next big undertaking will be. Fables may be on the back burner as the Harry Potter director aims to bring a franchise of Stephen King’s The Stand movies to the big screen. With news from IGN it would appear that Yates and writer Steve Kloves are ready to commit to the project:

‘The Stand’ Movie Coming Soon?

I don’t know why they have to make a Stand movie at all when the old six-hour mini series is so blatantly awesome. My favorite scene is when a ‘super flu’ infected guy confronts Gary Sinise’s character in a stairwell and says “come down and eat chicken with me beautiful, it’s so dark!” I laughed exceptionally hard, but it wasn’t over because Gary Sinise proceeds to kick him in the face area with a scream of rage. Effin’ classic.

The Dark Tower Falls – Movie/TV Project on Hold

I’m sure many of you, like myself saw this coming just as soon as the production of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower project was pushed back a number of months. Yes, unfortunately Universal has chosen to bail out of the huge undertaking of three Dark Tower movies and two seasons of a TV show to bridge the gap between movies. Universal reps have not stated as of yet why but I have a safe assumption: money. Because we all know how much capital it would take to nurture a project that surpasses the gamble was The Lord of the Rings.

The Dark Tower – Universal Not Moving Forward?

Say it ain’t so! Like any ambitious and large undertaking in film, The Dark Tower may be getting put on hold because Universal is getting a little gun-shy. (Get it? The Gunslinger? Gun shy?) Javier Bardem is set to star in the trilogy of the popular series as Roland Deschain, the Gunslinger.
