There is real plethora of excellent television currently airing on Sunday nights as everyone rushes in to fill the time-slots that were held by Game of Thrones and Mad Men last month. What follows were my top 5 TV moments *SPOILERS ALERT!* from Sunday night…

New HBO Show ‘True Detective’, Plus A Lot of New ‘The Newsroom’
TV may long have been the ‘unwashed masses’ when it comes to the entertainment industry but there has been a very obvious shift in recent years of big Hollywood names finding their way to the small screen. Very often they land at one of the premium cable channels. Premiering next year is a show on HBO that has quite a bit of star power attached.
Even though Woody Harrelson is no stranger to television, he’s been more of a movie guy in recent decades and Matthew McConaughey hasn’t been on TV at all outside of a few guest spots here and there. So you can imagine that the people behind HBO’s new series, True Detective, are pretty excited about the future of their show. The two men star as Louisiana cops and from the newly released trailer you get the idea that they might not be completely on the up and up.

HBO Released Another Trailer for The Newsroom…and it’s Weird
A couple of days ago we posted the first two looks HBO had released of The Newsroom and I mentioned that there was a third that had been available for the briefest of moments but was then taken down. Well, they put it back up! Not sure what the deal was, perhaps they have a timeline they are working on and someone pressed go too soon but whatever the reason, it doesn’t matter because here it is.
I love this promo. I don’t really know why I love it so much, but I do. It’s so simple, and yet it’s so pretty at the same time. I’m a fan.
Not only did they re-release that promo but HBO released a new full trailer for the show that does very little to give an idea what the new season has in store for us. As a matter of fact, if I wasn’t aware of the show and had a rudimentary understanding of the characters, I’d guess this was just as likely a commercial for perfume or something. Because perfume ads rarely make sense and either does this.
Is Jeff Daniels going to spend the second season trying to get in touch with his god complex by wandering through the desert? And can someone please tell me what 90’s era commercial the image of the TV with static showing on it reminds me of? Because I can not place it and it’s driving me insane. I thought it was an MTV commercial but no dice.
Speaking of MTV, if you were curious as to the song used in the trailer, it is ‘Can’t Pretend’ by Tom Odell. This video is worth watching if for no other reason than to watch a guy rock out playing a water bottle.
HBO Releases New Trailers for The Newsroom and Boardwalk Empire
So Game of Thrones is in the last few episodes of its season, Veep is plugging along (if you aren’t watching Veep then you are missing out), and True Blood is about to start up soon which means it’s time to talk about The Newsroom and of course, my favorite, Boardwalk Empire!
First up, The Newsroom. After a first season that seem to have moments of brilliance coupled with typical Sorkinisms that maybe are starting to get old, The Newsroom is gearing up for their sophomore season and one has to believe that they are looking to iron out some of the kinks. Perhaps Aaron Sorkin will listen to the cacophony of women clamoring to be portrayed on-screen as more than petty gossip mongers with nice legs who don’t know how to work fancy phone email machines. Or perhaps not. Maybe Will McAvoy will pull his head out of his ass and stop being a complete well, ass, to everyone around him outside of those few moments where he freaks out that everyone thinks he’s an ass so he acts like a normal human being. I get that it’s part of his character but after a while, it just got old. Don’t get me wrong, I actually am a big fan of this show, would be okay with changes in this new season.
Speaking of new season…
That teaser is just beautiful. So simple – I mean it’s just lights turning on for pete’s sake – but I really enjoyed it. There was for the briefest of moments a “behind the scenes tease” which was even better but it has since been made private for reasons unknown.
Enough of this Newsroom talk though because every day that passes means we are one day closer to season four of Boardwalk Empire!!!! Gyp is no longer and things are dicey up in New York between Rothstein and Lucky so who might step in the spotlight this season? Apparently Jeffrey Wright is up to the task signing on as Dr. Valentin Narcisse, “a ‘Doctor of Divinity’ and philanthropist who controls Harlem”.
Not only Wright but blink and you would have missed him, Ron Livingston is joining the cast. Word is he’s going to have some type of relationship with Gillian so in other words, don’t get too attached because he’s going to die.

That’s all I’ve got for now. As the summer goes on I’m sure there will be plenty more Boardwalk Empire news but for now we just have to sit back and wonder “what will Margaret do this year?”
